Shalitashi Fm

Period:
Jurassic

Age Interval:
Lower Jurassic, J1 (TJ16, TJ17).

Province:
Xinjiang

Type Locality and Naming

It was named by the Compiler

Jingeng Sha (coordinator) Group for the Regional Stratigraphic Chart of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in 1981. The naming section is located at Shalitashi on the southern wing of an anticline north of Wucha County, Xinjiang, with its reference section being situated on the northern bank of the Yerqiang River of Aktao County. Lowermost (first) formation in Ye'erqiang Gr (= Yarkant Gr).

Synonym: (莎里塔什组); Shalitash Fm

Lithology and Thickness

It is composed of grey and grey-green conglomerates, intercalated with a small amount of sandstone, siltstone and carbonaceous shale, with a thickness of 500-2500 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Aus conglomerate

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It overlies unconformably the Precambrian Aksu Gr or Sinian System. Regionally, the next older unit is the late Triassic Huoxiaer Fm (column TJ16) or the early Triassic Wuzunsayi Fm (column TJ17).

Upper contact

Regionally, the schematic strat column indicates the next younger unit as the Kangsu Fm

Regional extent

The formation is distributed mainly in the Tuoyun Basin till the Kangsu area east of Wucha County, and represents grey-green conglomerate, intercalated with sandstone, siltstone and carbonaceous shale. And from there on southerly, it is found to occur in the Aktao County and Duwa area of Pishan County in front of the Kunlun Mts, with its thickness reducing to 500 m, and to be intercalated with brick-red sandstone and mudstone.

GeoJSON

null

Fossils

It yields bivalve fossils such as Utschamiella sp., Pseudocardinia carinata, P. submagna and Sibireconcha sp., as well as plant fossils as represented by Coniopteris hymenophylloides.
